The burden of filing your taxes each year, and getting the full refund you’re entitled, is easier to manage when you have some support.

Hundreds of individuals and families experienced exactly this sort of tax relief in February, thanks to the generosity of some 120 KeyBank volunteers and 11 community nonprofit organizations around the country. Together, volunteers at these locations provided free-tax preparation services during KeyBank’s Super Refund Saturday event.

For 15 years, KeyBank employees in locations across the bank’s footprint have partnered with community nonprofit organizations to provide free tax-preparation services for low- to moderate-income individuals and families.

The events are a cost-effective way for attendees to navigate the potentially confusing tax-preparation process and ensure they’re receiving their full refund and earned income tax credits (EITC) when eligible.

That Community Feeling

The 2020 event, hosted in 11 metropolitan communities across 7 states, resulted in 689 tax returns being filed, which generated more than $1.4 million in federal and state tax refunds.

It would not have been possible without the help of the more than 120 KeyBank employees working at the events, as well as the hosting facilities. Sponsoring this successful and widely celebrated event is central to KeyBank’s long-running purpose of helping the communities where it operates to thrive.

“We were once again excited to work closely with local nonprofits for this event to support our neighbors in the communities we serve with free tax-preparation services,” said KeyBank Vice President of Community Development Banking Seth Reimer. “We’re proud to collaborate with the 11 nonprofits in this worthwhile and much-needed event.”

KeyBank volunteers saw the event as a way to connect with community members in a capacity outside of their day-to-day roles. Ginger Perez, a personal banker in Bonney Lake, Washington, participated at Super Refund Saturday for the first time. She found it especially rewarding to offer local support and assistance for a task that can seem overwhelming at times.

“It’s incredibly important to me to serve my community,” said Perez, who welcomed attendees as they entered the Goodwill in Tacoma, one of the Super Refund Saturday locations. “Having the opportunity to greet each person enthusiastically as they began the daunting tax-preparation process was really fulfilling. KeyBank continually finds ways for employees to serve our communities – and this was one way to give back.”
