Holiday Preparations: How to Make Your Home Ready

Holiday preparations

With the holiday season upon us, it's a good time to get cracking on your holiday preparations. In addition to fall cleaning, take time to finish repairs and take on home improvement projects before your guests arrive for the holidays. This way, your home will be an inviting place for all to enjoy.

Make Sure Your Kitchen Is Ready to Shine

Kitchens are at the heart of the holidays. So make sure your kitchen is up to the task and consider remodeling areas in need of some love. This can be smaller things like flooring and appliances or larger projects like new cabinets, all the way up to a full remodel. For example, it may be time to put in new kitchen countertops. Over time, countertops can become scratched or gouged, creating spaces where bacteria can hide out. New countertops made of a nonporous surface can make your kitchen look great and help keep your family healthy. This is just one of the many ways you could benefit by remodeling your kitchen for the holidays.

Spruce Up Your Exterior

Your home's exterior is the first thing guests will see when they arrive, so you'll want to make sure the outside of your home is in top condition. Check woodwork for chipped paint and touch up window and door trim as needed. Cut back overgrown plants and trees to provide a clear sight line to the house. Think bigger, too. Replacing windows can be a great way to save money on heating and give your home a refreshed look. Also see if it's time for a new roof. A roof in poor condition can cause water damage and raise heating costs. Plowing and cold weather can damage your driveway, so evaluate whether it's time to repave or add a sealant.

Prepare Your Home for Winter

Fall is the time to transition your home from summer to winter. Check if your home is properly insulated. Having adequate insulation can keep your home warm and cozy. It's also important to have your furnace cleaned and inspected. If your furnace is more than 15 years old or is causing humidity or heating problems in your home, it may be time for a new one. Bob Vila offers a handy list of signs that it's time to upgrade your furnace. If you plan on using your fireplace to invoke a cozy holiday atmosphere, now is the time to schedule a professional chimney inspection.

The holiday season is a time to dream big and make sure your house is really a home. If you have home improvements in mind, a line of credit may be just the tool to help you.
