Silly name, serious threat.

SMiShing – or phishing via text message – occurs when imposters send fraudulent texts in an attempt to steal personal information. Although SMiShing attacks have become more common in the last few years, cell phone users can help protect themselves by being vigilant and keeping these tips in mind.

Verify the sender

Beware of messages that have a number that says it is from “5000” or some other number that is not a cell number.

Avoid links

Don’t click on links within text messages, especially if they are from an unfamiliar number.

Don’t respond

Ignore text messages that request private or financial information from you, and never call a phone number included in a text message.
