Penney’s Legacy

Key Moments showcases extraordinary relationships and the power of exceptional service. This is the story of Penney and her family.

I know Alina helped my mom with savings bonds and stuff like that, but I didn’t know to the extent until we came in and told Alina that my mom had passed, and I could see the reaction. I was like, “WOW, she really, really cares.”

The first time when I met Penney, we had a really strong conversation about her future, and she mentioned to me her family—she said I really want you to meet my daughter Lynne, I really want you to meet Amy, my granddaughter—because I want to make sure they’re all set and all taken care of.

Given how Alina was so close to my mom and, you know, Amy, and then got to meet me and know me and now to see Penney, it just makes the whole circle—it makes the whole legacy of everything.

I can’t wait to be part of college planning for her and be part of her journey—and who knows, maybe I’ll be part of her kids’ (lives) and continue the legacy.

All these years later, Lynne can still picture her mom, Penney, writing KeyBank checks. And, like it was yesterday, she remembers tagging along with her on Penney’s Saturday banking trips to their local Key branch in South Portland, Maine.

Her mother always banked with Key. In the years before her death, in 2020, Penney formed a close bond with Alina Dubois, KeyBank Area Retail Leader for southern Maine. Alina helped Penney manage her savings and investments. One day, Penney entrusted Alina with something deeply important to her.

“Penney worked so hard all her life,” Alina says. “She worked for her family and wanted to make sure they were well taken care of. She knew that I would take care of her and that I would take care of her legacy.”

When Penney died, Lynne and her daughter, Amy, went to the bank and broke the news to Alina. They cried together. Later, Alina led Penney’s family through the financial next steps. Every detail was in order.

“It’s immeasurable to know that Alina and Mom worked to make sure that Mom’s legacy was safe for our family,” Lynne says. “It means everything to us.”

Their relationship with Alina continues to grow. And as Penney did, Lynne and Amy turn to Alina for their banking needs.

“Alina is very special,” Lynne says. “She is family.”

Now Amy has a daughter of her own – named Penney.

Given how Alina was so close to my mom and Amy and then got to know me, and now to see baby Penney, it just makes the whole circle – it makes the whole legacy. I’m sure Alina will be right there guiding us through every part of it.

Alina is ready. “I can’t wait to be part of college planning for little Penney and be part of her journey,” she says. “And who knows, maybe I’ll be part of her kids’ lives and continue the legacy.”

She thinks often of the woman who started it all.

“I’ll never forget Penney,” Alina says. “She was somebody special to me. The relationship that we built together – it’s more than just banking. It’s life.”
