Every year more than 8,000 KeyBank teammates across the country contribute their time and talents to local nonprofit organizations to give back to their local communities for Key’s annual Neighbors Make the Difference Day®.
Communities thrive when volunteers unite. That’s why thousands of KeyBank employees volunteer each year, taking responsibility to contribute to the well-being of their local communities. When individuals come together to dedicate their time and talent to serve others, lives are brightened, and communities are transformed for the better in meaningful ways.
Neighbors Make the Difference Day began in 1991, when a group of Alaska employees volunteered for service projects and gave the day its title. By 1993, the idea had swept across many of the communities Key serves and became an official day of employee volunteerism. It is now the hallmark of Key’s commitment to its communities and a leading corporate volunteerism effort in America.
KeyBank Turns Volunteering into Virtual Effort
When the pandemic took hold of the nation, KeyBank reimagined its celebrated annual Neighbors Make the Difference Day in-person volunteering event into a virtual experience, turning the one-day event into something with even greater impact.

“When it was obvious that Key’s traditional Neighbors Make the Difference Day could not occur this year, the team quickly shifted to adapt the model for virtual volunteering. Although there were obstacles at the beginning, we persevered and ultimately provided over 9,000 virtual opportunities. With the assistance of nearly 70 regional Neighbors Day coordinators, Key showed up in force across the enterprise. We are so pleased with these results,” said Karen White, National Director of Neighbors Make the Difference Months.
In all, Key employees participated in hundreds of virtual volunteering events across the country this spring and summer. From June 1 through July 31, nearly 450 Key employees logged 3,000 volunteer hours, serving 255 nonprofit agencies. Their volunteer efforts brought assistance and comfort to countless others in their local communities.
Famicos Foundation and KeyBank join forces to help a Cleveland neighborhood
In 2019, more than 70 KeyBank employees volunteered with the Famicos Foundation in a neighborhood cleanup for residents in Cleveland's Glenville neighborhood.
This marks the second year in a row that Key has worked with the Famicos Foundation. Its mission, to improve the quality of life in greater Cleveland through neighborhood revitalization, affordable housing, and integrated social services, aligns with Key’s purpose to help clients and communities thrive.
This year, the Browns Give Back charity organization provided additional support. Cleveland Browns Running Back Nick Chubb and Browns’ mascot Chomps joined us to help with the neighborhood cleanup effort, which included mulching, planting flowers, and playground improvements.

KeyBank Tax Preparation Event Results in Happier Returns, for the 15th Year
During KeyBank’s 15th annual Super Refund Saturday, hosted in community centers nationwide, 120 employees volunteered their time to provide free tax preparation services to hundreds of individuals and families. The event resulted in 580 tax returns being filed, which generated more than $1 million in federal and state tax refunds.
