In response to changing technology that enables employees to work from anywhere—home, on the road, or in their offices—government IT leaders are seeking ways to improve digital workspaces so workers can experience greater flexibility and efficiency.

These mobility trends highlight the need for cost-effective technology solutions and upgrades that will keep data secure while delivering anytime/anywhere access. A new white paper reveals how government agencies are using technology to break down the barriers of time and geography by creating digital workspaces for their employees.

While new workspace technologies offer promise for greater agility, increased productivity, and easier data sharing, they also raise the question of affordability, especially for governments.

Government IT Survey

In August 2018, the Center for Digital Government (CDG) surveyed 170 IT executives who work for state and local governments nationwide. The survey included questions pertaining to digital workspace solutions, including factors that influence their procurement decisions.

According to the report, governments expect to gain multiple benefits from digital workspace technologies:

  • 61% of respondents said they want to give employees access to applications and data at any time, from any location.
  • An equal number reflected their desire to give employees greater agility or mobility.
  • The IT leaders also expect the digital workspace to enhance productivity, make it easier to upgrade or refresh software solutions, and generate overall cost savings.
  • When government IT leaders think about digital workspace investment, 25% surveyed selected software and applications as their main priority, followed by hardware solutions.
  • Network security in current digital workspace solutions was the leading concern among the respondents. As a result, they anticipate prioritizing security upgrades in 2019.

Procurement Plans

More than half (54%) of the government IT respondents planned to procure cloud-based applications in the following months. Additionally:

  • Security (including multi-factor authentication) at 51%
  • Remote/mobile devices at 44%
  • Collaborative technologies/services at 44%
  • Single sign-on at 35%
  • Customized digital workspaces at 15%
  • All-in-one solutions at 12%
  • Smart card support at 6%

Plans for procurement varied widely, but funding was identified as the most frequent barrier to adoption of digital workspace solutions.
